So often, when I write, I’m simultaneously convincing myself not to write.
Nobody will care about what you say. Somebody else has already said it better. You’re sharing too much and you’ll regret it. You’re not sharing enough so what you’re writing is insignificant. Your thoughts will bore people. You’re not expert enough in the things you care about and you don’t care enough about the things you’re an expert in.
I write every day. But mostly sternly worded emails and stuff like, “WHEREAS, the Parties entered into a Co-Marketing Agreement dated as of January 5, 2004.” That kind of writing is easy to justify. I get paid for it.
This month my goal is to publish something every day, either here or elsewhere. Doesn’t have to be good, doesn’t have to be long. No ‘WHEREAS’; provided, however, that the ‘WHEREAS’ in the previous paragraph and each incident of ‘WHEREAS’ in this paragraph are permitted.
Here are some things I could write about:
- I’m reading “Storyworthy” by Matthew Dicks and want to try out his Homework for Life idea of recording one storyworthy moment in each day.
- I’m on the third draft of my lawyer story and I think I’m finally figuring out a writing process that works for me.
- The progression of my teach-yourself-writing program over the past year.
- Preparing for NaNoWriMo.
- How I’ve never seen the original Mary Poppins movie, but it didn’t stop me from singing my kids a Mary Poppins-style song about how “if you slap your brother, you must only slap his butt,” because if your aim is off, something inappropriate may happen, which I will not disclose here.
- My idea for a whole book about inappropriate words.
